Canoga Park is a neighborhood in the San Fernando Valley region of the City of Los Angeles, California. Before the MexicanAmerican War, the district was part of a rancho, and after the American victory it was converted into wheat farms and then subdivided, with part of it named Owensmouth as a town founded in 1912. It joined Los Angeles in 1917 and was renamed Canoga Park on March 1, 1931, after Canoga, New York. The area was the homeland of Native Americans in the Tongva-Fernandeño and Chumash-Venturaño tribes, that lived in the Simi Hills and along to the tributaries of the Los Angeles River. Native American civilizations inhabited the Valley for an estimated 8,000 years. In 1955, Rocketne, then a division of North American Aviation (NAA), moved into the area and built its main manufacturing and manufacturing facility in Canoga. At the time, the area was known as "Warner Center" The area is now known as 'Warner Park' and is a major employer along with the Atomics International manufacturing facility along the Santa Monica River. It is also home to the Canoga park Airstrip, which is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Los Angeles. It has been known as the "Baby City" since 1912, when it was called Owensmouth by Los Angeles Suburban Home Company as a sales tactic in that the town would be the new mouth of the Owens River, after the LA Aqueduct would be completed the next year.

History

Canoga Park is the primary city name, but also Box Canyon, West Hills are acceptable city names or spellings. The area of present-day Canoga Park was the homeland of Native Americans in the Tongva-Fernandeño and Chumash-Venturaño tribes. Native American civilizations inhabited the Valley for an estimated 8,000 years. In 1863, the syndicate San Fernando Homestead Association led by Isaac Lankershim and Isaac Van Nuys purchased the southern half of the historic San Fernando Valley. The area was originally named Owensmouth by Los Angeles Suburban Home Company by general manager Hobart Johnstone Whitley as a sales tactic in that the town would be the new mouth of the Owens River, after the Los Angeles Aqueduct would be completed in 1913. The town was founded on March 30, 1912, and the Suburban home Company contracted with the Janss Investment Company, to sell properties. The lack of an independent water supply made annexation to the City of Los Angeles inevitable, and on February 26, 1917, it joined with its larger neighbor. In 1955, Rocketdyne, then a division of North American Aviation (NAA), moved into the area and built its main manufacturing facility in Canoga park. The Rocketdyne facility was operated by Aerojetne, who moved out in 2014. Atomics International and Santaana Field (SSFL) are major employers along with Atomics and Susana Field in Santa Ana, California. In the end of 2014, Atomics moved out and Demolition Park and canoga Park became the site of the Demolition Center.

Geography

Bell and Dayton Creeks flowing from the Simi Hills, and Arroyo Calabasas from the Santa Monica Mountains are several of the headwaters of the Los Angeles River that originate in the western San Fernando Valley that flow through Canoga Park. These and other small creeks supply stormwater and suburban runoff water to the LA River, and several are considered year round. Although the c Creeks are now channeled and run within concrete walls, they do form a significant urban wildlife landscape. This area experiences hot and very dry summers. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, CanogaPark has a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, abbreviated "Csa" on climate maps. The area is bordered by Woodland Hills, West Hills, Chatsworth, Winnetka, and Chats Worth. The Los Angeles river itself begins at the confluence of Calab asas Creek and Bell Creek behind Canoga park High School. The city is located in the San Fernando valley, in the northern part of the San Gabriel Valley. The San Gabriel valley is home to a large population of indigenous wildlife left within the San Fernando Valley. It is also home to the Santa Monica Mountain, the tallest mountain in the Los Angeles regional system, and the tallest peak in the city of Los Angeles, the Santa Catalina Mountains. The town is located on the California Census designation of "CA", which means "city" in Spanish.
